A major English study report has been carried out concerning the accumulation of depression during pregnancy. About 10 percent of all women are affected. The symptoms can be extremely diverse. The main symptom is a decreased mood, although this is not mourning in a narrow sense, but is described by the patients concerned often with words such as “emptiness,” “despair” and “indifference.”
Psychosomatic physical symptoms are common. It is dominated by a negative outlook and the feeling of hopelessness. Self-esteem is low. The depressive symptoms during pregnancy are often influenced by “issues”. These may be some concerns regarding the health of the child.
The initial experience of a psychotic disorder in pregnancy is rare. More often worsened by existing psychotic disorders. This is partly due to the specific biological and psychological situation of pregnant women, for others it may be caused by a reduction or discontinuation of antipsychotic drugs.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder may worsen during pregnancy. In panic disorder, this is also true. In some patients who previously had only mild symptoms there may occur during the period of pregnancy, a massive accumulation of panic attacks.
