Children being drugged by parents for convenience
The Journal of Pediatrics published the findings of a study which indicated that each year there are around 160 cases of malicious over-the-counter drug use on children. According to the author Dr. Shan Yin this is nothing less than child abuse, that seems to go completely unnoticed and more or less totally unchecked.
The doctor studied statistics that indicated that kids were being plied with all kinds of medications including sedatives, analgesics, street drugs and many other more dangerous variants such as antipsychotics. Apparently, regular cold medications is the most popular drug of choice.
He discovered around 1400 cases over an eight year period, of those just under 15% resulted in some kind of serious reaction and nearly 20 children actually died from these drugs.
He believes that parents are taking the easy option instead of dealing with an unruly or difficult to control child they feel it is much simpler and quicker to simply medicate the problem away.
