Little children developing bulimia and anorexia

Children in Britain as young as five are getting treated in hospitals for the eating disorders bulimia and anorexia, details released on Monday reveal. The amount of children less than nine years old that have been hospitalised for disorders that have been debilitating has doubled in the last 12 months, with the trend spreading nationwide and in part due to the fashion craze to be a size zero.

Ninety-eight children aged 5 to 7 were hospitalised in the past three years with another 99 children ages 8 and 9 treated during the same time. Close to 400 children between 10 and 12 years of age and 1,500 between the ages of 13 and 15 were hospitalised for eating disorders.

National Health Service trust figures were released due to the freedom of information act. The true extent could be even worse as a number of hospitals would not release their information. The chief of Beat, Susan Ringwood, said children were getting pernicious messages. The ideal woman’s figure that is being promoted is that of an adolescent not an adult.

Pictures are viewed by girls in magazines of extremely thin models and they automatically identify with them and think they need to be that way. Over the last decade, body image has been more of an influence on younger children than before. We are more obsessed as a society today with body image compared to 20 years ago, as young people now want to make themselves appear as appealing as they can.

They also look up to models and celebrities, even though most of the time they have been airbrushed and what you see isn’t real. An unhealthy relationship is being developed with food as youngsters become ever more preoccupied with their diet.
