UK childhood obesity problem could overtake the US

Child obesity is not just rampant in America but also in the UK, according to a research that was done some years ago, showing that British children are getting big twice as fast as the kids in America. Unless the proper authorities do something about this, the number of obese children will likely only grow.

The government has made some efforts to raise awareness on how dangerous and fatal it is to be overweight but it doesn’t seem to be working because the rates have not gone down. Parents don’t seem to be getting involved in helping with their kids weight loss, thinking their children are still healthy.

Partly to blame is the fact that there are so many available unhealthy snacks and companies do not seem to mind that they are contributing to the obese population so long as they are making money. This is why the Public Health is suggesting that the overweight children each have a personalised diet programme.

There are different ways to accomplish this and one of them should begin in the schools where children spend majority of their time in. Schools already have information on the children’s weight and this can be used to control their food consumption. Cafeterias should be making an effort to make a healthy lunch to be served to kids and the portion sizes should be just right.

It was also suggested that the serving size at restaurants be changed if the food is for children, it should definitely be less than what the adults are getting since needs for both are different. Food companies that are making snacks should also be mindful of the ingredients they use since they are targeting the younger market.

Television advertisements for fast food chains, sweet snacks and salty chips are also being evaluated. There’s a chance that it will be removed from the air during the time when kids are sure to be watching TV so that there’s less chance for them to be tempted to eat more.
