Cancer researchers call for better diet management

Researchers involved with cancer have recently called for the amount of salt, fat and sugar to be reduced in foods. They have stated that if diet is managed better, around 30 percent of all cancers could be prevented.

Campaigning groups have said that if the government really wants to tackle cancer then they need to start implementing rules about how much fat, sugar and salt products can contain.

The World Cancer Research Fund have recently released an estimate that shows that by 2030 the number of people being diagnosed with cancer in the UK will rise to around 400,000 every year. This is a significant increase on the 300,000 figure that is seen today.

The analysis by the company has extended across the EU and it estimates that all countries will see an increase in cancer rates over the next 20 years. Ireland’s is the country with the biggest predicted increase, at over 70 percent. Luxembourg, Cyprus, and Malta are also going to see significant increase in their cancer rates.

The research has suggested that the main reason behind the increase in cancer rates is due to people living longer. However, they did highlight that if people make changes to their lifestyle then the amount of cancer being seen could be significantly reduced.

WCRF’s communications and science director is Dr Kate Allen and she has commented, “People need to be increasing the amount of physical exercise they are doing, and reducing the amount of unhealthy food they are consuming if they want to reduce their risk of cancer.”

In order to achieve a significant reduction in the amount of cancer, the WCRF have stated that people need to stop eating so much processed food and drinking as much alcohol and sugary drinks. Without a significant change to peoples lifestyles, cancer rates are only going to continue to increase.
