STI’s grow at alarming rate among young women

Health officials have said that in 2009 there were half a million new sexually transmitted infections reported.  Out of these, many of those affected were women under the age of 25 and teenagers.

Officials believe that one of the reasons for the increase in STIs is due to a reluctance to put on a condom.  12,000 more cases were reported in 2009 over 2008 marking an upward trend that has continued to grow over the past decade.

66% of women with new STIs were in between the ages of 15 and 24 with over a half of all the male cases of STIs falling into the same age category.  Gay men also reported high rates of STI diagnoses.

Head of the HPA STI section, Dr. Gwenda Hughes, stated that this shows that poor sexual health is still a leading problem among young adults in the UK and men that have sex with men.

Hughes continued to state that the figures also paint young women as vulnerable due to the fact they are at an increased risk to have unsafe sex and do not yet have the correct sills to negotiate safe sex.

88% of female Chlamydia cases, 73% of female gonorrhoea cases, and 66% of new genital wart cases affected those under the age of 25.  The most likely time that a woman will get a STI is at age 19 or 20 while for men the ages are 20 to 23.
