Some people are concerned about breast cancer screening causing harm to the body but scientists have recently estimated that the benefits of having breast cancer screening dramatically outweigh the risks of the procedure. It is estimated that breast cancer screening currently is saving around twice as many people as it causes harm to.
Breast cancer screening is known to save thousands of lives, but it is not a perfect science, and many women each year are told that they have tumours when they do not. On the NHS, women who are aged between 50 and 70 years old are offered x-rays of their breasts to make sure that they don’t have any cancer.
The screening process is something that allows the early detection of breast cancer to make sure that it doesn’t develop into a more dangerous form of the disease which could ultimately result in death. In recent years, the effectiveness of the screening has been called into question by various scientists who state that it could be doing more harm than it does good, however recent studies have shown that this is simply not the case.
Scientists who operate out of Queen Mary University of London have just calculated that for every 1000 women who undergo the screening process, over 20 years, nine individual lives will be saved.
When you consider all of the figures for the UK an impressive number of women are being saved by breast cancer screening. It is estimated that around 1.5 million women regularly go for the x-rays in the UK, which means that nearly 15,000 women are being saved every 20 years because of the procedure. These figures are not known for certain, but they are the best estimate that the medical community has currently come up with.
