Child receives serious bite from adder in unusual health scare

While walking in the New Forest with her family on Good Friday, Tyler Butcher was bitten by a venomous snake on the foot. She was then taken to Southampton General Hospital after her leg turned black due to an allergic reaction from the venom. Anti-venom was given to her and it is reported that she is recovering in the hospital.

While walking back to the car, her father said she let out a yelp. His first reaction was that a stinging nettle had stung her but he changed his mind as he saw the snake slither away and saw her wound. She was in a great deal of pain and could not stand on the leg.

Her whole foot started to bruise and turn black then it continued up to her groin area. At that time he called 999 and his daughter was rushed to the hospital. Once the entire leg turned black the anti venom was administered. She was doing well he said and is looking forward to letting all her friends now about what happened.

The adder, Britain’s only venomous snake loves to bask in the sun and lives throughout the country but is more commonly found on open heathland in the south of England and in woodland clearings. It will only attack when it feels threatened. It has been over 20 years since someone died of an adder bite and the number of bites is the highest in the summer.
