Hormonal changes and BV

Bacterial vaginosis is a condition that stems from an overabundance of a certain types of bacteria in the vagina. There are several forms of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria that normally live in the vagina. When the amount of ‘bad’ bacteria  increases dramatically to well beyond the normal amount, vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor can occur.

Bacterial vaginosis is by no means a life threatening disease, but the symptoms have a tendency to be troublesome. If a woman is suffering from an abnormal discharge, she should be examined immediately to determine if she has serious diseases like Chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Some symptoms are also similar to those of a yeast infection, so she should be examined to rule that out as well.

Bacterial vaginosis is extremely common, so it is nothing to be embarrassed about. According to studies, around 1/3  of women suffer from it at some point during their lives. The condition is prevelant amongst women that are pregnant.

In a lot of reported cases of bacterial vaginosis, there are no symptoms at all. If symptoms are reported, they are usually vaginal discharge accompanied by an unpleasant odor. Every woman secretes different amounts of discharge. Therefore, there is not a specific amount of discharge that can be considered abnormal. In many cases, bacterial vaginosis is commonly misdiagnosed, so any woman that is experiencing an unusually high amount of discharge should be examined.

Bacterial vaginosis can be diagnosed through a pelvic exam. The cervix will be checked to see if it is overly tender. This could possibly denote a more serious problem. A sample of the vaginal discharge will be examined under a microscope to determine if symptoms are a result of bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection. A pH level of more than 4.5 in the vagina is a sign of bacterial vaginosis.

When a woman goes through hormonal changes associated with menopause, it can result in a pH imbalance and consequently bacterial vaginosis. This problem has a tendency to affect women’s confidence at this difficult moment in their lives. However, there is no longer a need to simply accept this condition and to suffer in silence.
