6 Not So Run-of-the-mill Kitchen Timesavers

Although there are plenty of kitchen gadgets around, you can’t always rely on them to actually save time. Think about it – an electronic spaghetti-twirling fork sounds fun but it isn’t necessarily all that helpful.

What you need are quirky and fun kitchen gadgets that are still functional. Whether you’re looking for an aide to stain removal or a nifty appliance that promises perfect rice every time, we have six quirky (yet practical) kitchen gadgets you’re sure to love.

Rice measuring cup – not only does this little cup save time, it also means your rice will turn out at the perfect, tender consistency. Once you have the right proportions of rice to water, you can simply cook at a low heat without stirring. On the other hand, if you make a lot of rice and have limited hob space then you could go one step further and think about investing in a rice cooker.

Stain removal spray – incredibly useful for all of those dried-on spots, a stain removal spray saves you the time and effort of scrubbing pans with a wire brush. If your stain is on kitchen fabrics, like tea towels or aprons, rather than kitchenware then a spray might be too abrasive cause damage. Instead, work out what to use with this handy stain removal tool.

Spiraliser – these gadgets are all the range in kitchens at the moment, and have a surprising number of uses. For example, you can use them to create ‘pasta’ from courgette, crispy chips from sweet potato, or a fun salad from beetroot and carrots. It’s a small gadget that doesn’t take up too much space but if you don’t think you’ll use it often enough to make it worthwhile then you can make tagliatelle-style strips using a simple vegetable peeler instead.

Cupcake maker – for baking fans, this gadget takes the time and effort out of making cupcakes. Simply pour your prepared batter into the tin, and the machine does the hard work for you, leaving you to get down to decorating. Cupcakes not your thing? You can also find pop-cake makers, which feature even more of the fun decorating part.

Drinks machine – get your next house party off with a bang with snazzy drinks machines. You can invest in a sophisticated cocktail kit for more formal occasions or let out your fun side with a collection of slushy makers. If these sound a little extreme then a versatile ice-maker can still come in handy and make preparing drinks for your guests a breeze.

Garlic peeler – this does precisely what the name suggests, with no faff. As garlic is a staple in most recipes, a peeler can save time while keeping the lingering off your hands – and it’s just a small silicone tube so it won’t take up too much space in your kitchen drawer. Put it beside your onion slicer, which performs a similar job, and prepare these tricky vegetables in a jiffy.

So there you have it, form and function really can join forces when it comes to kitchen gadgets. Invest in these quirky options to get something cool for your kitchen while cutting down the amount of time it takes you to complete everyday culinary tasks.
