Dangerously low levels of iodine are being found in schoolgirls which could put the future health of generations at risk says British researchers. Over 67% of teenagers are quite deficient in the mineral says the new study partly caused by the low amount of milk that is being consumed in the 21st century. Lack of iodine is dangerous as it can lead to mental retardation in babies if the mother was low in iodine while pregnant.
Many experts are saying that salt needs to have iodine as it already is in some countries. Another alternative is to add it to folic acid supplements that are recommended on a regular basis to women during the early stages of pregnancy. The study is the most recent one to warn pregnant and young women who may jeopardize their baby’s future health by not consuming a balanced diet or taking additional minerals and vitamins.
A new study that appeared in the Lancet medical journal studied girls from 14 to 15 years old from nine different schools throughout the UK. Urine samples were analyzed of over 700 girls and found 66% were deficient in iodine.
Overall over 50% had a mild deficiency and an additional 16% had moderate and 1% had a severe deficiency. Teenage girls were studied because young women are the most vulnerable to get side-effects if they become pregnant.
